The Albanian settlements in Italy started in the second half of the XV century.

People coming from different parts of Albania arrived at various times, settling in Basilicata, amongst other places, and founding colonies in San Costantino Albanese, San Paolo Albanese, Barile, Maschito, Ginestra e Brindisi di Montagna.

Albanians brought along their language, costumes and traditions.

The traditional costume is one of the most peculiar and interesting aspects of the cultural heritage of this community.

In order to preserve some elements of the original Balkan culture and avoid the risk of disintegration for this community, since the Sixties, the Arabersche people in San Paolo and San Costantino have started social and cultural events.

Amongst them there are folk events, exhibitions, ceremonies, researches on the original culture, on historical events, on the structure of their language and on handcraft, thus committing also in creating a Museum of Arbersche Popular Traditions and Culture.
