This is the name of the old centre of Campomaggiore. It was almost destroyed on 10th February 1885 by a landslide that forced all the people to move to the place where the centre is now.
What remains of Campomaggiore Vecchio, built on three terraces on the hills and founded by the Rendina family in 1741, is the ruins of the huge ‘Palazzo Baronale’, with powerful walls, and the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo. Both face the big Square, designed by a pupil of Vanvitelli’s.
At the back of the ‘Palazzo Baronale’ there is a rare sequoia, brought by the Cutinelli-Rendina Earl.
This place is fascinating because it is a ghost village and because it has one of the most evocative landscapes in the Valley.
Opposite this village, on the other side of the river, the rocks called Dolomiti Lucane rise up in all their majesty.
