The Astronomical Observatory in Toppo di Castelgrande had a very powerful telescope, 1-metre-and-a-half wide, called TT1, as per Toppo Telescope no.1.

Castelgrande is one of the few places in Italy where the sky is dark enough to allow good astronomical observations.

The astronomical observatory in Castelgrande, with very high-tech instruments, is a fundamental research tool for astronomers and for the whole Southern scientific community.

This observatory hosts the SINGAO, the first international centre in Italy for astrophysics experiments.

Some guided tours of the observatory are arranged for groups of tourists or students.
