This village, clearly mediaeval, has uncertain origins. According to some historians, Castelluccio Superiore should have been built up where the old town of ‘Tebe Lucana’ was. This was a centre built by the Osci people and then destroyed several times. According to some other historians, it should have been built up on the ruins of the town of ‘Merulum’.
The presence of some ruins of the Castle show that this village used to belong to several feudal lords, such as the Sanseverino, the Palmieri, the Ciciniello and the Pescara di Diano.
Inside the village there is San Nicola’s Church, XII century, in which there are a marble altar and a wooden two-shutter door of the XVII century. The Gothic Church of Santa Margherita, patron saint of this village, was built around the end of 1500 and inside it there are a wooden choir and a marble polychrome altar of the XVII century.
Not far from the village, near the Zaccana Mountain, it is possible to visit the Sanctuary of the ‘Madonna del Soccorso’ of the XVII century.
