A main religious milestone in the tour around Venosa is the Cathedral of S. Andrea.
It was commissioned from Pirro del Balzo and built between 1470 and 1502.
The engraved façade in stone has a portal of the XVI century.
On the external walls there are some gravestones and some Roman inscriptions.
The sober and elegant inside of the Church is characterised by a nave and two aisles with pointed arch. On the high altar there is a Byzantine icon of the ‘Madonna dell’Idria’ of the XIII century.
In the aisle on the right, a valuable Renaissance arch is the entrance to the Chapel of the ‘Santissimo Sacramento’ (Holy Sacrament).
Amongst the most precious masterpieces there are the ‘Annunciazione’ by Carlo Maratta and the ‘Assunzione della Vergine’ by Francesco Solimena.
