In the centre of the town it is possible to visit the monumental cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, whose construction (of the Norman period) is attributed to Robert Guiscard in about 1061.

The Romanesque style which characterised the original construction has been gradually erased by the many Baroque reconstructions of the building by Bishops De Robertis, Carafa senior (1638) and his grandchild Pierluigi Carafa junior, after the plague of 1657.

Its present look was requested and obtained by Bishop Antonio del Pilato between 1774 and 1778, under the technical guidance of the engineer Carlo Brancolino and the architect Domenico Sannazzaro, who took care of the stuccoes.

In 1968 Bishop Bruno Maria Pelaia had the cathedral endowed with a beautiful bronze door with a memorial epigraph.
