Matera and its Hill (MT) - Ceramic and Terracotta Handicraft

Terracotta cuckoos – cocks which were a symbol of prosperity in ancient times – are traditional.

Each craftsman makes them according to his own canons.

The famous ‘fischietti’ are also made of terracotta. They are handmade and painted in bright colours.

They are in the shape of several animals such as doves and cocks, which are reminiscent of farmyards and old rural customs.

Small Christmas crib statues are also made in the area.

The old wood-fed ovens for baking terracotta vases are still active.

The town of Grottole boasts an ancient tradition in the production of ceramics, especially pots and other types of crocks coloured with burnt lead.
