Area of Potenza (PZ) - Chestnuts and Truffles

On the mountainsides of the Vulture Mountain there are several chestnut woods producing particularly big and tasty fruits, so that every year in October the traditional ‘Varola’ (chestnut) Festival is held in Melfi.

This is one of the most prestigious cookery occasions in Basilicata.

In this area there are also some valuable species of truffles, that have been known and appreciated in the far past, but that have only recently started being picked up and used in Basilicata. Both the valuable white truffles (Tuber magnatum) and the black truffle (Tuber aestivum, Tuber aestivum var uncinatum, Tuber brumale) can be found along the banks of some streams and in the woods, not just in the area around Melfi.

These are refined products with a mysterious fascination, which contribute to making the list of the cookery specialities in Basilicata even richer and more intriguing.

In summertime, in Brienza and in Muro Lucano, and in autumn, in occasion of the agricultural Fair in Tito Scalo, some interesting meetings take place, often when also some Truffle Festivals are taking place around the area.
