The church was built on a small hypogean ancient church of St. Pietro and Paolo, and at present it can be visited.

It contains a fresco representing a visit at Matera of the Pope Urbano II in 1093.

Some chroniclers hand down that the church received as a guest St. Francesco D’Assisi in person in 1218.

The original structure of the church, rising again to the early XIII century, was enlarged in the XV century, before achieving its greatest beauty in the XVIII century, when the beautiful face was built by the architects Vito Valentino and Tommaso Pennetta in the end of the Baroque.

In the centre of the face the statue of Immacolata is situated and there are St. Francesco and St. Antonio on the two sides.

The inside, having only a nave surrounded by chapels, guards a wonderful polyptych of nine distemper paintings on wood, ascribable to Bartolomeo Vivarini or to Lazzaro Bastiani, artists of the XVI century.
