Palazzo San Gervasio - D'Errico Picture Gallery

Camillo D’Errico was born in 1821 in Palazzo San Gervasio and belonged to a noble family.

He studied in Naples, where he got in touch with the main cultural centres.

There his passion for art and painting aroused and he started buying precious books and pictures.

Apart from art and literature, Camillo was also involved in politics.

He took part to the Risings of 1848 and of 1861 and was elected Mayor of Palazzo San Gervasio. He filled this office for 35 years, committing himself to the realisation of important works for the development of the territory.

Being heavily into art, he collected a heritage of great relevance. In his will, he gave his library, about 6,000 volumes, and his picture gallery, with more than 300 paintings and 500 prints, to his home village.

After his death, an association was his executor and managed his inheritance.

Now this important collection of paintings is in Matera and Palazzo San Gervasio claims for its return.
