The Good Friday procession in Barile is one of the most characteristic cultural events in the Vulture area.

The inhabitants of the village prepare the event for weeks and are deeply involved into the Holy Representation.

In the afternoon of the Good Friday, some characters from the Gospel and some symbolic ones crowd the streets of this village and take Christ to the scaffold.

Ahead of the procession are three men riding horses, the three little girls, symbolising the three Maries, a girl dressed in black and also other 33 girls dressed in black, who represent the age of Christ.

The scene is enriched with many more characters, such as the gypsy woman, symbol of wealth mixed to danger and evil.

In this context, where reality is mixed with characters created by folk imagination, an event strongly symbolic for a whole community is represented.
