This village, with its stone houses and Castle on the mountainside of a hill, reminds of a traditional crib. History and religion are linked here. In this village Queen Giovanna I of Naples was killed and S. Gerardo Maiella, patron of Basilicata, was born.
Three different faces, witness of three different periods, characterise this village.
There is a Roman ‘Muro’ (boundary wall), where it is said that the battle between Hannibal and Marcellus took place in 210 B.C.; a mediaeval one, nowadays known as ‘Pianello’; and an area characterised by Renaissance buildings.
Amongst the places worth visiting there are the Duomo, dedicated to San Nicola, and the Museum.
Just out of the village there are the Caves of the ‘Vucculi’.
