The National Museum of Metaponto contains the rich heritage of archaeological materials found in the Greek colony of Metaponto.
The various stages are reconstructed in the museum: the first prehistoric manifestations, the arrival of the Greeks in the V century B.C., the development of the colony of Metaponto between the rivers Bradano and Basento, the Romanization.
Local handicraft and refined decorated rounded Italian-Mycenaean vases are shown in the rooms. A lot of this materials were manufactured directly on the spot by craftsmen emigrated to the west.
An area is devoted to weapons, personal ornaments, a lot of which made of bronze, both for men and women; the latter are particularly precious.
