Opened in Palazzo Lanfranchi, in Matera, on 6th May 2003, the ‘Museo Nazionale di Arte Medievale e Moderna’ of Basilicata is divided into three sections.

The first collects paintings, stone sculptures, wooden statues, silverware and frescoes coming from all over the region. The works of art displayed in this section are more than 100 and were made between the Middle Ages and the XVIII century.

The second section is devoted to the D'Errico collection; 70 paintings lent by the ‘Ente Morale D'Errico’, housed in Palazzo S. Gervasio, are displayed. In the third and last section 44 paintings by Carlo Levi are displayed.

The building housing the museum comprises two churches. The church of Santa Maria De Armenis will be immediately open to the public, whereas the church of Madonna del Carmine, which will be used as an auditorium, is currently being restored.
