Commune in the province of Potenza
This village was originally inhabited by a Basil community and, because of its strategic position, was long disputed between the Longobards and the Byzantines. In the Norman period, Rivello was under the control of Lauria and in 1268 it took part to the Ghibellin Rebellion.
The old centre is very evocative. Worth visiting are the Convent of Sant’Antonio da Padova, Santa Barbara’s Church and the Church of San Michele dei Greci, in Byzantine style, containing a polyptych of Neapolitan school, of 1614. In the ex-Convent of the Observants (XV century) there are a wooden choir of the XVII century, by Ilario Montalbano and carvings representing everyday life and handcrafts.
In the past this village was well known because of its copper handcraft.
