S. Gerardo’s Cathedral, according to some, dates back to the XIII century, though some other sources state an earlier date. One thesis is that it dates to the V-VI centuries A.D. and the presence of an inscription certainly dating before the XIII century supports it.

A wide semicircular flight of steps leads to the entrance to the Cathedral. Its façade is sober and elegant.

On the entrance portal S. Gerardo is represented in the middle, while in the corners there are some Evangelist symbols. Around there are scenes of the history of the people in Potenza since 1111, year in which Gerardo La Porta was proclaimed Bishop.

The Church used to have a cross-shaped layout, but was changed in the XVIII century. Nowadays, its imposing structure is characterised by one nave with side chapels. On the right side of the transept, in a chapel, there is the statue of S. Gerardo; on the left there is the Chapel of the ‘Santissimo Sacramento’.

Nave, transept and apse are covered by barrel vaults with frescos.

The dome, where nave and transept meet, is decorated with the ‘Gloria del Padre Eterno’.
