The ‘Sentiero della Croccia’ leads to the ruins of an old town dating from the IV century B.C., while the ‘Sentiero di Tempa Castello’ leads to the ruins of an old village of which houses and steps dug in the rock remain.
When Saracens used to rage around Matera and Potenza, a military outpost was created by an Arabian man called Bomar, but this is everything known about the Pietrapertosa Castle.
The original part, documented as a Saracenic fortress, can be identified with the ‘Arabata’, at the foot of the Castle, which was rebuilt by the Normans.
It became important during the Norman-Swabian period and during the Ghibelline rising of 1268 it aligned with the Swabians.
