The area of Matera, surrounded by the Apulian ‘murgia’, the valleys of Basilicata and the Jonian coast, is well-known for the production of wheat.

In this area, the most widespread construction is the so-called ‘masseria’ (farm), a residential and productive structure which was the centre of the economic activities of the region.

Owing to their socio-economic importance, farms were fortified and protected with defensive circular or square towers, boundary walls and patrol bays to defend the barn, the herds and the farmers.

As a further protection for these real autonomous economic centres, they were located on hills, which allowed a better defence and more security in case of external attacks.

The most widespread fortified structures were the ‘masseria a corte’, the ‘masseria-palazzo’ and the ‘masseria-villaggio’. It is still possible to visit a lot of fortified farms in this area.
