The MUSMA – Museum of Contemporary Sculpture in Matera – is situated in Palazzo Pomarici, a remarkable building of the 17th century, and gives hospitality to a rich collection of international works of art dating from the end of the 19th century up to the present day. The MUSMA is indeed a perfect combination of sculpture and the Sassi’s very characteristic carved sites.

Palazzo Pomarici – with a surface of more than 1500 sq. metres – is still known as ‘one-hundred-room palace’. On the ground floor two courtyards lead to seven large caves. An elegant stone staircase leads to the banqueting hall and to the numerous apartments on the first floor.

The MUSMA’s collection includes more than 200 works: drawings, engravings and sculptures made of marble, iron, clay, plaster cast, wood and papier-mâché; it represents a significant heritage entirely donated to the museum by artists, the artists’ families, private collectors, art critics, national and international galleries, and by the cultural association Circolo La Scaletta, which has been organising the Great Exhibitions in the Sassi since 1978.

Moreover, the museum’s library has more than 2,500 books, artist books and catalogues donated by the renowned Scheiwiller publishing house.

The creation of the MUSMA has been made possible by the Fondazione Zétema with the collaboration of the Comune di Matera and the Circolo La Scaletta.
