In the Sassi there are the Museums of Peasant Culture, which illustrate peasants' lifestyle until the 1950s, when the about 16,000 inhabitants of the Sassi were moved to the new quarters of the modern town.

‘Casa Grotta’ of Vico Solitario, in the ‘Sasso Caveoso’, is an example of partly hollowed into the rock and partly built habitation, dating from the XVIII century. The masonry kitchen, the cistern for collecting rainwater, the stable and the manger can still be admired. The house is rich in original furniture of the period, such as the large double bed, the wooden cradle, the chest of drawers, the various chests used to store food, different kinds of tools.

The ‘Museo-Laboratorio della Civiltà Contadina’, in Via S. Giovanni Vecchio in the ‘Sasso Barisano’, reconstructs environments and jobs of the past, connected to agricultural labour and craft activities carried out in the old quarters of Matera: knife-grinder, saddler, boilermaker, shoemaker, potter, kilnman, pot mender, basket-maker, stonecutter, mason, blacksmith, carpenter, cabinet-maker, tailor and tanner.
